Best Live Score and Sports News Apps for Golf Fans

Keeping abreast of the latest golf tournament action has become a lot easier and more efficient since the advent of the smartphone. No more do you have to peer through shop windows to try to catch a glimpse of the action on a display TV or even buy a newspaper to get up to date on the scores and standings. But which of the sports news apps is best at actually delivering the news you need? Here are our top choices:

PGA Tour Mobile

PGA Tour

For keeping track of PGA Tour action and the go it does not really get any better than this official app. Scores are displayed in as close to real time as it gets and all of the extra stats that a ‘real’ golf fan are available at a swipe as well. Add to that the bonus of live streaming video of in progress tournament play that, provided you have decent coverage, works rather well and a wealth of interviews and other information and you have a must download app for any golf fan.

The Golf Channel App

Golf channel

One of the nice things about the Golf Channel App is that it offers 24/7 video access to golf content, so when there is no play there are still interviews, documentaries, bonus footage and original programming on offer if you truly prefer to consume that much golf content.

During tournament play the live coverage is extensive, often offering more than is shown on TV and if two tournaments happen to be broadcasting at the the same time you can switch between feeds with a single swipe which is also rather handy.

If you go to ESPN’s main website then unfortunately you usually have to dig rather deep into the main navigation menu to actually even find the golf section. The advantage of the ESPN Go mobile app is that it can be set just to show you the sports scores you are interested in with no digging required. You also have one touch action to ESPN Radio nationwide if you prefer to listen to your sports news.

As they do tend to be the stats masters in sports in general if a stat exists in relation to a tournament then it will be listed somewhere and relatively up to date. So if you want to impress your friends and colleagues by being able to tell them the minutest details of trivia related to the current contest the ESPN app can help you. The push notification system is rather good as well, as it can be set to alert you whatever is most important to you, rather than harassing you every few minutes with every single update.

If all you want is the score and nothing else (which is probably best if you are supposed to be working) then this very simple app is probably the best option to have downloaded to your phone.

The information delivered to you on the go by the app is designed to be as minutely personalized as you want it to be and then delivered to you, via alerts and push notifications, on an as available, as needed basis. Many of the same ‘deep’ stats that you can find on the ESPN app are here as well and what we do like is the ability to set everything so it only tracks one or two players. Only really care what’s happening to Rory or how well Tiger is (or isn’t) faring? Then you can set the app so that the only news you’ll be alerted to involves them.
