Established by the Professional Golfer’s Association (a British based association) the responsibility for the tour was handed over to the PGA European Tour organisation in 1984, making it an independent organisation. Primarily helpd in Europe the three tours have started to branch out and be held in locations outside Europe and the US.
The PGA European Tour is controlled by golfers whose primary goal is to protect the interests of professional golfers involved in the tournament, most notably maximising their income. It exists as a company limited by guarantee and is run by professional staff but controlled by a twelve-strong elected board of directors. These are elected from a pool of past and present European Tour players. There is also a tournament committee which consists of 14 current players.
