The Irish Open is part of the European Tour golf tournament and is held at late July or early August. Founded in 1927 the tournament has had a troubled history due to lack of funding which for a 25 period, saw the Irish Open disappear of the European Tour schedule except a brief revival in 1953. In recent years financial woes have continued and Adare Golf Club, in County Limerick had to cut a 3 year tenure short, hosting the tournament in 2007 and 2008 but not 2009. Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort cited their inability to continue to hosting the event due to the losses they suffered in the first two years.
The 2011 Irish Open will be played at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club in Killarney, County Kerry and has been buoyed by the confirmed presence of recent major winner Rory McIllroy at the Irish Open and by a new sponsorship deal with Heineken.
