Top 5 Golf Scorecard Apps for iOS Devices

Over the last few years – as in since the iPhone debuted – a smartphone has become an indispensable golf bag tool to many golfers and for a lot more than keeping in touch from the greens. GPS, swing analysis, putting green reads, weather forecasts, course reviews, instructional videos. Name almost any aspect of the game and yep, just like the Apple ads state, there’s an app for that.

Not every golfer wants to add all of these complications to their game of course, but the one thing that every golfer does need is a scorecard. And keeping score on a smartphone is, in reality, a lot easier and more efficient than messing around with papers and pencils.

There are a lot of standalone golf scorecard apps for iOS out there right now and it’s easy to think that they must all be pretty much the same. After all, a scorecard’s a scorecard. There are some apps that stand out over the others though that may indeed deserve a place on your mobile. Here are our top five picks.

golf app 2

Possibly the one of the most complete (affordable) golfing scorecard apps out there this slick looking app allows to electronically score not only any type of golf game you might be playing but to keep track of side contests(closest to the pin, longest drive) and even to create tournaments.

The social aspect of this app is highly featured as it encourages you to share your cards at every turn (although you can turn that feature off if it becomes annoying) and even has an in app camera function should you wish to record your triumphs to be displayed next to a certain score. Actually using the app is very straightforward. Choose your course (over 20,000 are preloaded and you can add more) input your players (up to six), set the game types and off you go. Hard to believe this one is free as it offers so much.

The most notable thing about this app over others is the speed in which scorecards can be set up and then the actual scoring entered. There are a number of one tap functions that achieve this and, if like many, you tend to play the same course a great deal you can set up dedicated template cards so that things go even faster.

Also, in addition to the standard sharing options (email, Facebook, Twitter) you can export your scoring directly to an Excel file, something that is rather handy for those who work with a virtual coach.

Remember that time that you really would have had a hole in one had it not been for that annoying gust of wind? Or the time you played a great road despite the fact that it was pouring with rain by the ninth hole? Many golfers track their scores to as a part of their overall training plan and what is neat about this app is that it allows you to measure and record these variables, allowing your to remember to ‘asterisks’ that contributed to your score and adjust for them.

Download the Windows/Mac companion software to your laptop/PC and you can get even more out of this app as it will take your scores, analyse them and then offer tips for improvement. It even creates rather nifty looking graphs and graphics based off your scores to make tracking them over time easier.

Although very simple – no social sharing, no fancy analytics – this app is very good looking and quickly creates neat, well designed scorecards that can be saved for as long as you like and tracked from within the app.

Ease of navigation is another plus here as it’s one tap to get to any screen, something that is not the case in the more complex scoring apps, thus potentially saving you precious time on the green.

If all you are really looking for is a way to keep score for your own party and you really don’t want to spend too much time inputting stats and dealing with the learning curve of a complex app then this is a great choice.
